The Rudiments to Home Security
We recently posted a tweet on our LifeCellar twitter account offering a security tip to the public:
Home Security Tip: Put yourself in the devious shoes of a burglar — you’ll discover the weaknesses and defects of your home security.
We’ve elaborated on this tip to encompass all parts of home security because we understand what a “home” means to individuals. To some, a home is where family is. To others, it’s a safe place to secure important documents. Regardless of the definition, a home can be burglarized if certain safety precautions are not met. We’ve focused on the key parts of your home that are targets for burglars, as well as what you can do to reinforce overall security.
Doors
-
Add a bar to your sliding door for protection.
Install reliable and durable locks on all entrances and exits.
- For glass sliding doors, use a sturdy bar, like a pipe or something made of metal, and place along the track of the sliding door. This impedes the sliding door from being opened from the outside.
- Reinstall any old doors, especially wooden doors, as these are easy to break through.
Windows
-

Protect your home by placing bars on windows.
Install or upkeep window locks. Place locks on all windows, even those in upstairs bedrooms, as they are also vulnerable to burglars. Also, bars on windows may be old fashion, but they surely do the job.
- Make sure that any window screens are secure and in place, so as not to draw attention to burglars. If a window has no screen or has an unfastened screen, burglars see this as an invitation and an easy portal to your home.
- Use curtains at night to hide valuables like televisions from the eyes outside. If a buglar doesn’t know what’s inside he’ll be unsure of the risk reward and will be less likely to break in. If he knows on the other hand that he can get a 12,000$ tv in a few seconds after looking through the window… uh oh.
Garage
-

Keep your garage closed as much as possible; no need to entice burglars.
Never leave your garage open or unattended.
- Similarly, don’t leave valuables, such as televisions, overt. If burglars see these items in your garage, they may target you since they have already seen your possessions. Again, don’t entice burglars.
- Leave your car windows up and your doors locked. This way, if any burglars manage to get into your garage, they have no access to your car (which means no easy get-away)
- Leave your garage light on to deceive burglars from the outside. They’ll think someone is hope and will be discouraged to attempt any criminal activities.
General Precautions
-

An alarm system could protect you and your valuables from criminals.
It’s definitely smart to have an alarm system. So even if you’re not home, you’ll have trustworthy professionals with a watchful eye regulating the security of your home.
- Have a watchdog, as dogs typically fend off criminals. Better yet, purchase a “Beware of Dog” sign, even if you don’t own a dog. This misleads thieves and makes them think twice before targeting your home.
- Install motion sensor lights, so you’re immediately warned about outside activity.
- Keep your important documents in a safety vault or any other secure location. Keep your copies of forms or files with us, so even if a burglar gets their hands on the original data, you’ll still have access to your information.
If you’d like to step it up a notch, here’s a link to video security systems so that you’ll stay connected and in control from any location.
