Holiday Safety While Celebrating
Safety during the holiday season is often a subject that is overshadowed by the excitement that holidays bring. Regardless, safety is especially important to enforce during the holidays for two reasons:
- Many families have left their houses vacant due to holiday travel to visit relatives and friends. Meaning to say: while you’re away, the burglars will play – thieves find the holiday season an exceptionally opportune period to act. Skeptical it won’t happen to you? Read this article on a Chicago holiday break-in during Thanksgiving.
- Christmas spirit is fueled by lights, warmth, ornaments, and activity. This means a large group of individuals (including a significant number of children) will be surrounded by hazardous items, such as fireplaces, Christmas lights, burning candles (festive but nonetheless dangerous), icy roads, and delicate ornaments.
In either case, you should be prepared to ensure your safety and the safety of your loved ones during the holiday season!
HOME:
To secure your home while you’re out traveling, make sure to maintain security on your doors, windows, and garage, leaving none of these unattended while open. For a more detailed overview, check our recent blog entry on home security.
FESTIVITIES:

Keep the holidays festive by placing your tree in a safe location.
Christmas tree
- Make sure your Christmas tree isn’t obstructing any doorways. One wrong move, and your tree could topple over and potentially harm innocent bystanders.
- Keep your Christmas tree away from any heat sources and never, ever put your tree by lit candles. (When we say “Christmas warmth,” we don’t mean a tree on fire!)
- If you’re using an artificial tree, make sure it’s fire resistant. The details should be indicated on the box.
- Keep all breakable ornaments away from a child’s reach.

Keep your candles in a safe location to prevent danger from visiting for the holidays.
Lights and Candles
- When you leave the house or go to bed, turn off the lights.
- Ensure that any indoor or outdoor lights have been inspected and always check for any damages before propping them up. Replace any lights if they’re broken.
- Use candles that have protective holders and keep them away from children or locations that are busy, as people can easily knock them over.
- Make sure there’s a fire extinguisher in proximity, and test all fire alarms so you and your family are protected at all times.
