What to Avoid During the Holidays

Shopping and eating –  two aspects of Christmas that are both fun, yet inevitable. However, one wrong move and you could coil into holiday mayhem. If you eat too much of a delectable, but unhealthy food, you may just have to take the bench on the holiday festivities. Likewise, if you make an unwise online purchase with some man named Bob, a wizard bandit who’s exceptional at making magically money appear in his bank account, you may very well have ruined you’re ability to shop ever again having lost such a substantial amount of money to Bob.

Thankfully, we understand the magic behind food trickery, as well as the psychology behind equally deceiving criminals.

Now let’s take a look at which naughty edibles you should stay away from to keep your heart healthy for the holidays. Just a food for thought: what you should have on your mind at all times is moderation. These are just suggestions of foods that are high in calories or trigger heartburn.

As tempting as holiday meals are, try to stay away from or moderate your intake of naughty foods.

Foods on Santa’s bad list:

  • Trimming the fat: foods like fried chicken, chips, or wings are high in fat and can cause stomach discomfort. Anything that’s been heavily fried in oil increases your risk of getting heartburn. Instead, bake or broil chicken, like this awesome chicken parmesan bake recipe.
  • Avoid the acids: Foods made with tomatoes, such as pasta with red sauce, are high in acidity and are unsafe to eat on an empty stomach. Instead, pile up on vegetables and fruits with citrus.
  • Prevent the sweet tooth: unfortunately, too much chocolate can trigger heartburn due to the caffeine. Simply reduce how much of it you eat, since we understand how tempting and delicious chocolate can be. You can also eat dark chocolate, as it contains 70% pure cocoa, which are vitamin-like substances.
  • Go mild: avoid spicy foods, as they typically elicit heartburn due to the spices and hot sauces that create a negative reaction in your body. Go for something a bit blander; if you can’t see yourself giving up spicy foods, just reduce the portioning and inebriate yourself with water.

Safe shopping to surely fill the stockings:

    • ‘Tis the season for credit cards: avoid using your debit card to make online purchases. Using your debit card puts your savings account at risk if a hacker gains access to your account information. Instead, use your credit card. Better yet, shop in person at nearby stores.

Shop safely online to ensure you have money for the rest of your Christmas gifs.

  • Confidentiality is the greatest gift: Never enter your personal information into a pop-up screen. No company will ever ask you to input your sensitive or financial data in a pop-up screen. Also, be sure you’re shopping on a website that is legitimate and trust-worthy. Put to good use your online researching skills and type in the company or website name into Google.
  • Deck your e-mail with top notch security: be mindful of e-mails asking for your financial information, such as you bank account number or social security. As always, never open e-mails you’re unsure of. Use a different e-mail account that is simply for online purchases. This separates your personal life from your business transactions.
